While the Abbeys may not be convenient, getting there is half the fun. Even if you only rented a car for the day, there would be a whole world available to you. You will find Belgian highways to be in generally in very good condition and fairly easy to negotiate.

If this is your first trip to Belgium, then by no chance should you miss a drink on the Grand' Place in Brussels. For both my wife and I, the first place that made us fall in love with Belgium was the Le Roy d' Espagne. Directly on the square (ask anyone, they'll know where it's at) this classic Belgian tavern will allow you to sip some of the more popular Belgian beers (Leffe, Kriek, etc.) and sit by a warm fire. My wife can walk around the Grand' Place outside for hours gazing at the beautifully lit buildings and talking to artists.

For dinner in Brussels I would suggest that you not miss eating at the In 't Spinnekopke. Truly a Belgian institution. If you are just looking for a fun, good food (if maybe somewhat touristy) time then you could have excellent seafood in any of the places along Rue Des Bouchers or Petite Rue des Bouchers. Enjoy.
