I've Eaten Horse Without Realising !!

Posted by Mark on 01/11/2002 03:22:14 AM

Sorry to gross out you horse fanciers, but I have eaten horse steaks more than once ... but without knowing !! When me and the family first moved over here to Belgium (October 99) we were able to buy British Beef in our local supermarket ... it was labelled British Beef (i.e. in English !!). But then because of the Mad Cow disease and foot & mouth scares, the beef from Britain stopped coming in, which left the Missus a bit "in the dark" about what she was buying. Now I don't speak Flemish, but I do know quite a few words and can get by asking for things in shops (and pubs !!). So me and the Missus are doing the weekly food shop when she picks up a piece of "beef" and says "this piece looks pretty lean doesn't it ??". Looking at the meat, and the label, I responded "Yes it does, but the label says Paard, which is the Felmish word for horse". And suddenly the colour drained out of the wifes face ... "Errm, Mark ... in that case we have been eating horse for the last two or three weeks !!!"

To be honest, I will eat anything (within reason ... I have had Reindeer, and Emu amongst other things !!) so it didn't really bother me. And it does taste almost the same as beef, except it probably has less fat in it. But perhaps unsurprisingly the wife hasn't bought it since !!

Cheers !! Chamion the Wonder Horse.
