Another visit to glorious Ghent

Last week I went over to Lille, France for a few days to attend a railway infrastructure exhibition in connection with my work. I managed to sneak in a beery visit to Ghent for about 7 hours (please donít tell my boss!)

Well, I got the train from Lille Flandres to Ghent Dampoort which is a lot closer to the city centre than St Peters station in the south. The weather was absolutely amazing with temperatures nudging 70 degrees under clear blue skies.

My first port of call was the excellent Trappistenhuis, a place Iíve been meaning to get to for a long time. This place reminded me of a cosy library that serves top quality beer. I started with an Achel blonde, which is improving all the time, I then had a De Dolle Boskeun and then a Braven Apostle from De Proef (a new beer for me which I rather enjoyed). The service was a little slow as it was about 2pm, but I liked the atmosphere here and the beer list was pretty good too.

I then walked over to Dulle Griet which was pretty quiet apart from a table of jolly scousers enjoying their touristy Kwaks. I liked this place a lot and the service was excellent. I had a Strubbe Vlaskop, Jan Van Gent and a Boon Duivelsbier (3 new beers for me). I really liked the decor here and the food was good too.

I was starting to feel relaxed by now, I then walked over to Waterhuis aan de Bierkant. I sat outside by the riverside in the sunshine and enjoyed a wonderful Zatte Bie, one of my all time favourite beers. Ghent is so underrated it should really be up there with Bruges in my opinion. Navigating the city on foot can be a little tedious but you are richly rewarded.

I then walked down to the excellent Hopduvel beer warehouse, here I picked up a few goodies, notably 2 x 75cl bottles of Gauloise Brune a 75cl bottle of Vapeur Saison de Pipaix and 5/6 assorted bottles. I then wandered off to one of my all time favourites, the Hopduvel where I had a Floreffe La Meillure outside in the lovely garden. Time was not on my side so I made a swift departure for St Peters station to catch my train back to Lille.
