Not ALL seasons that great

Posted by Dick on 07/03/2003 12:50:23 PM

For once, I disagree with Jeremy. Go between March 21 and September 21. You get more daylight, which doesn't mean that much inside bars, but you might also want to see some sights. Even if you plan to spend most of your time in beer joints, it's easier getting to them in fair weather. In fact, since Belguim is pretty far north by US standards, the summer days are MUCH longer.

Also, you have to pack fewer clothes (more room for beer), and don't have to carry around wet clothes as much. And you can enjoy many fine outdoor drinking experiences; there are lots of fine beer bars with outdoor seating for the sunny week. And, when the weather's nice, you can go to the beach and count nipples.

True, the most touristy places will be more crowded, but you can still have a good time. Plan your tourist stuff carefully, to dodge the worst crowds. For example, visit crowd-magnets late in the day. When my wife and I were in Amsterdam, there was an endless line to see the Anne Frank house all day. But at 6:00 that evening, with plenty of daylight left, we walked right in.

I think you'll be happier with your first visit being in good weather.

Cheers,

Dick
