Re: Novice travelling to Belgium....

I must first give a hearty THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!! to all the colleagues on this board who have helped me with my BE travels!!! I could not have experienced BE beerculture anywhere nearly so deeply without your time, assistance, and expertise. THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!!

That said, my advice to you as a novice would be to take a tour. I do admit an invested self-interest here, as I'm setting up a fall tour affiliated with John's Grocery of Iowa City (but you can depart from any airport; just meet us in Amsterdam / Utrecht). FYI, there will also be a spring tour if interest/demand warrents it. I've spent godknows how many hours-days-months of internet & email &c plus 10 weeks in BE doing prelim groundtruthing to set this up -- you should seriously consider taking advantage of the homework which has already been done for you. Unless you have a burning desire to reinvent the wheel, LOL??

To understand this, you must realize that I'm in an incredibly precious slot -- at many many BE breweries, I can honestly go in and say that I sell their beer in one of the premier beerstores the USA. The hospitality which I have recieved because of this (THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!!) is beyond your wildest imagination.

It is true that you can experience quality BE beerpubs with no help other than Webb & this board -- but don't you want the insider's tour of at least a few breweries as well? And do you really want to be confined to the bigger & more English-speaking towns (e.g. Antwerp of Marcus's post), or do you want to get out into the tiny funky rural villages where it really will be quite helpful to have an assistant who speaks EN/FR/NL&DE? Oh, and then there's the $$$ aspect of staying all the time in big cities, doubled up with the fact that big cities do not let you experience the fantastic hospitality & friendliness of the smaller BE villages. (Not that the cities are in any way hostile, mind you, and I have indeed had many a good time myself in Antwerp. I just would never want to have that be the limit of my experience.)

Speaking of $$$'s, the novice can end up spending more -- sometimes LOTS more -- $$$ than is necessary for a BE tour. Once again, our experience will help insure that you get the biggest BE Beer Bang for your travel buck.

Our tours will have ample free time to explore on your own as well, just FYI... and if you want to spend more than 10 days, then take the tour & stay after the group disbands & explore on your own for a while, after getting a guided idea of the realm of the possible & relevant methods of exploration.

email me via eric.nospam@johnsgrocery.com (remove the obvious) & I'll send you our working itinerary if ya wish.

proost!! Eric
