Dave,

You have to ask yourself a few questions to determine how you want to go about a trip to Belgium. Here are my suggestions, based upon three trips made since 1999, the latest being this past May.

Avoid big cities. Do not stay in Brussels. There are many nice small towns within easy traveling distance to Brussels. Beersel is very close, and has one of the best Lambic blenders (Drie Fonteinen). From Beersel you can walk to the train station and go right downtown Brussels, if you feel the need. There are nice places in Brussels. Cantillon is on my list of must see places. Also, Le Bier Circus is a world-class pub. I would suggest a day trip into Brussels for these two, and just cruising around to see the city.

If you don?t mind big cities that much, you can stay in Ghent. It?s just a half hour from Brussels, and 20 minutes to Brugge. Brugge is a great place to stay, and it is very centrally located for touring West Flanders. I?ve stayed at the same B&B three times. This last time it was 50 Euro for the two of us, and it included a great breakfast. It?s just a couple of blocks from the Markt.

Train travel is very easy in Belgium. However, there are places that you cannot get to via train. The Ardennes area is fairly devoid of good train connections.

I?m not sure how long you intend to stay. If you have a week, stay in Ghent or Brugge for at least half the trip. This gives you a base that is within an hour of everything in the western part of Belgium. Also, you won?t have to keep packing and moving from place to place.

If you have two weeks, get a car at the airport and head for the Ardennes. Here you can visit Fantome and Achouffe. Two of the greater breweries in Belgium. My visit to Fantome still ranks at the top of my all-time list. You can spend 3-4 days here, then head toward Antwerp. Stop at Westmalle on the way. Dump the car in Antwerp. Stay for 2-3 days. Then head to Ghent or Brugge. They are so close to each other that staying in one and visiting the other are almost effortless. These towns have some top-notch pubs as well. My pick would be Brugge. Stay here for 4-6 days. You could then go to Beersel for a few days, and visit the area in and around Brussels.

BTW, I will be posting the notes from my most recent trip sometime soon. Haven?t had much time to do so yet. Maybe this weekend will allow the time.

Cheers!

Rich
