What I like to do whilst in Belgium

Posted by ToddA on 07/03/2003 09:56:10 PM

I've already got a plan of sorts. But consider this... I've often thought of leading a tour to Belgium but I Always get stuck with the thought that... 1. one of my group gets lost, beat up, thrown in jail. 2. Gets so drunk that he refuses to get up delaying whole group.

3. The bus driver is pissed off and quits... etc. etc. I couldn't take the hassles and for that matter I couldn't go on a tour for much the same reasons...

I've been to Belgium 6 times. I love it there. It's easy to communicate for the most part. This last time I rented a car and just went all over the place. Chimay(sorry Venom), Hoflaize(Achouffe), Soy(Fantome), went over into Luxembourg, France. It was great! To offset some expenses I got picnic goods from the Del Haize or GB(the big grocery chains. It helped so I wasn't eating out every meal. Almost all hotels serve you breakfast included in the price of the room.

You have to figure out what you want to see.

If it's breweries that's easy, if you want to go to pubs that's real easy... I like to do both and attend a beer festival or event as well. You have to poke around on the internet for a while but it's easy to find something going on during the time you're there. My next trip is planned around the Zythos fest in Sint Niklaas in March 2004 and also the Cantillon Open Brew Day. I've always felt that going and doing two days of festival tasting more than meets my drinking needs. The rest is going and seeing things or just 'being there'. I love to go around Pajottenland and see the small pubs and visit the Gueuze blenders and brewers. Beersel is the place for me. It's a must visit if you even think you like Lambic. Gooik is a good day trip from Beersel and stopping in Halle to visit the StreekProducten Centrum makes it a great place to load up on cheap bottles of

local beers, jenever, jam etc.

I think Brussels is great I always spend at least two or three days there. It simply cannot be missed. There are to many bars and places to see to give it less than 48 hours.

I recommend the Atlas hotel. It's reasonable

walking distance to many good bars and restaurant including Spinnekopke. Antwerp is

nice as well though I don't know it like Brussels. You must go to Kulminator and my new favorite T' Waagstuk.

I could go on and on. Some much to do so little time once you are there. Even the best laid plans get screwed up so don't set anything in stone.
