My $0.02

Well Dave you certainly are getting lots and lots of advice. So I thought I'd add some more! Like Todd I've been there six times. Two of the trips were for two weeks at a time, two were for a week and two were just about 4 days each. Having been there a few times I was comfortable with the short trips as I already knew my way around a bit.

Tours are great for some folks and not so much so for others. I've been tempted a few times by the Global Beers tours and also the ones from beertrips.com. In the end tho they are just too damned expensive and I personally enjoy my freedom. While independent travel may not grant you as much access it more than makes up for it in freedom.

I like to spend time in the large cities because they are easily navigated on foot. You can't go wrong in Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp and Brugge. English is widely spoken in each of them and train travel is a snap. Being a big fan of lambics I also like to spend time in Beersel. I'm not much for basing myself out of one town and doing day trips because much like a tour you find yourself having to leave a great cafe in order to catch the last train back to your base.

I prefer the spring and the fall in order to avoid the summer crowds and bitter cold of winter. Scheduling around a festival is also a great idea because even if you are traveling solo you'll have the opportunity to meet up with fellow Babblers. The Zythos festival in March looks great but I'm also considering the Spontaneous Fermentation festival in Buggenhout in May.

I've had some good luck booking hotels in advance on hotels-belgium.com It's nice to have that already taken care of when you get off the train.

I usually plan on spending about 100 bucks a day on hotel/food/beer/museums/shopping etc. You can certainly spend more or less than that depending on your budget.

The Webb guide is more than sufficient for all your beery travel needs. I'd recommend another Belgian travel guide for museums, etc.
