Everything you mention about Brussels is great. However, you don't have to actually stay in Brussels to do those things. We had agreat late night session at Le Bier Circus then caught the train to Halle. My problem with staying in Brussels is the noise, and the cost. For a short train ride, you can sleep more comfortably and more reasonably in smaller towns just outside the city.

Also, I don't classify Ghent and Brugge as big cities. That's why I suggested staying there. I guess it's all how you perceive them. I'm from a fairly large metropolis, so these cities seem small, and I would not lump them in with Brussels and Antwerp. That could be my own misperception.

My main suggestions was stay outside of Brussels, and use the excellent public transportation.
