Great 'read' but a thought or two on the good 'ol USofA

Posted by ToddA on 10/08/2003 09:09:27 AM

Thanks for the kind words. You are truly a great beer writer with a book deal in the works I hope!

It looks like your trip was 'good to very good'.

But, alas you have (as most people do)notice Denver's homeless. I can't speak for Denver nor it's policies regarding vagrants, drug addicts and other people with mental health issues that

roam about downtown. It is too bad that our great country see's fit to solve issues on the other side of the globe but fails poorly on issues like homelessness, decaying infrastructure and other similar problems.

The second is what I think might be a outsiders impression of tipping here in the US. I am all for the gratutity being added to the price as is much the way in Belgium. It makes life easy to say the least. Mind you I'm not defending the tipping system that is in place here in the US...I'm just more used to it. With that in mind you tip based on service provided. When I say service I mean what has that person done to deserve a tip. If the service is crap I don't tip. If the service is above and beyond the call of duty I may tip to 25%. Yes, by and large people in 'service' related industries expect tips but most of them understand it is earned and not expected. Though they probably see the GABF as a bunch of 'a**holes' from out of town loaded with money and they want their fare share.

Moral of the story(or what point am I trying to make)? Give us another chance Joris. We aren't all bad...just some of us are bad.

I'd be remiss if I didn't say I think 'overall' Belgium is a much more civilized place than the US. It just wasn't the hand I was dealt so for now anyway...it's home.

ToddA
