I wholeheartedly disagree, and if you like, hook up with me at next year's GABF and I will show you.

You just need to be careful. If you are tasting a koelsch after 3 double IPAs then OK, but er, you shouldn't do that if you want to rate them, but then if you know enough to rate them, then you should know that. Basically, if you are serious enough to want to rate the beers you are drinking, you should know enough not to rate a helles or a koelsch (for instance) after tasting a smoked beer or barleywine. All you need is a little discipline and self palate knowledge (i.e. I just had an Old Ale and I know if I drink 2 or 3 samples of style X (but do not rate them) my palate will be clean enough for the next thing that I would like to rate) and you are good to go for rating that many beers. With the myriad of different beers and different styles available at the GABF, it is incredibly easy to stay on a theme of sorts if you like in order to more objectively view different beers.

IMO, the key is knowing what styles of beers are palate killers and more specifically what styles of beers are palate killers for you in particular. Once you have a palate killer, you must either stay with that style, or follow that style up with one that can play through the previous style's profile. If you do that, no problem. Otherwise your palate is going to be toast for the most part (although this CAN be corrected with some people).

Impossible, most definitely not. Can you do it with no plan whatsoever, IMO.... no.

Mitch
