I'm surprised that someone who has so much experience fails to recognize the subtleties in big beers like WWS, etc.

It all balances out in the end. For example: Smaller beers have less more subtleties, but once you down a few, they become masked. Same applies with bigger beers. And to me, subtleties in bigger beers are what make them intriguing...same with smaller beers, too. Sure you may be able to fairly assess the first few big beers, but after that, palate fatigue sets in. It's only natural.
