Carless in Watou

Posted by Dick on 04/04/2004 03:48:57 PM

First off, yes the Watou B&B is a wonderful place to stay, at a very reasonable price. Diane and I can not recommend it highly enough. You do have to reserve by phone (is this still true, folks?), and Bernadette's English is not the strongest. However, she manages. The only other guests while we were there were a bunch of very aimiable Brits, who spoke no French at all, and had no problems. If you can get a Babbler, for example, that peaks French or Flemish to book for you, it might be a lot easier.

Anyway, transport:

We arrived in Poperinge by train. By prior arrangement, someone came to pick us up. It was Guy Claes, proprietor of St. Bernardus Brewery. Nice service!

The B&B has a fleet of funky old bicycles available to guests. We found a pair that fit us well enough, and just rode into town. In fact we rode all over the area for three days, seeing the countryside, getting to and from great eateries and bars, and burning off a lot of the major calories we were accumulating. And, we never even thought of locking them. No one in West Flanders is desperate enough to want to take one of these beauties!

Anyway, they served us well for free, while we were there.

Cheers,

Dick
