Jim, you should definitely take the train for a half hour ride down to Izegem for a visit to 't Kroegke, one of Belgium's top five pubs with over 400 beers and a superb ambience. Its only open evenings Thurs to Sun inclusive.

A visit to Oude Speye in nearby Damme is also recommended - new-ish pub offering a great selection of beers.

De Haan on the coast is pretty close to Brugge and there you can visit De Torre, superb pub run by Daniel.

Watou, Poperinge and Ieper are all in a fascinating area which includes hundreds of war cemetries as well as several breweries, bars, and country cafes. On the way over to Watou you could call at De Dolle and Westvleteren to name just two breweries.

Closer to Brugge and easier to get to on public transport is Gent, which has loads of great beer cafes.

Hope this gives you some ideas but please ask if you need more detail.

Cheers

Jeremy
