The best place is:
Beer Mania - 400 Bières Artisanales Belges
174 176, Chaussée de Wavre (Waversesteenweg), tel 02 217 06 14, http://www.beermania.be . Metro "Porte de Namur-Naamsepoort"
This Speciality Beer shop, the city's biggest, was opened by Nasser Eftekhari in 1983. The place's excellent website has a list of all the beers and their prices, indeed the beers can be ordered from it, for shipment to most parts of the world.
There is also a very detailed pub crawl on the site. It was always possible to taste before purchase, but in October, 2002, the place was expanded into the shop next door, to incorporate a bar and a restaurant.
There is also more space in the shop, following the expansion. In the bar, all the shop's beers are available, making this the bar with the second biggest beer selection of Belgian beers in Brussels after Chez Moeder Lambic. Many of the beers ordered in the bar come straight from the shelves of the shop, so it is probably best to order something that suits being served chambré, such as a strong, dark beer.
The bar is open during shop hours, see the next paragraph, but, if there are customers in at shop closing time, they are allowed to stay as long as they want.
Beer Mania is open from 11am until 7pm every day except Sunday, but even on this day, it is open in December.
Beer Mania is some distance beyond the Petit Ring, which the quoted Metro station is on. To reach Beer Mania from it, leave by the Chaussée de Wavre exit, and it is to be found on the left on this street.
More central is the following:
De Bier Tempel
56, rue du Marché aux Herbes (Grasmarkt), tel 02 502 19 06. Tram Stop "Bourse-Beurs", which is below ground.
There are only around a hundred different beers, but this place opposite the Main Tourist Office, at 56, rue du Marché aux Herbes (Grasmarkt), is a don't miss for the Speciality Beer fan. Owner Regnier de Muynck is a genuine lover of Speciality Beer; so often such places are jumping on the Belgian Beer bandwagon, as one may possibly assume from a place in such a location, see the directions for getting to the place in the entry for Toone [in my downloadable guide to Brussels, http://www.whitebeertravels.com/downloads ].
As well as a marvellous selection of beers, including a good few from Wallonia, there are glasses, books, posters and presentation packs of beer with glasses.
The house beer, Babelaar, is brewed by De Proefbrouwerij, in Lochristi near Ghent ( http://www.proefbrouwerij.com ). There is a 10% discount for CAMRA and other EBCU members.
The Beer Temple is open from 10am until 7pm (9pm in Summer) each day.
Note that, in 2003, a branch opened in Bruges, at Philip Stockstraat 7 (tel 050 34 37 30).
