OK, I can chime in here.
The place is basically around the corner from where we live. Well, not exactly around the corner but close. Chaussée de Charleroi is a medium busy street that slants off Avenue Louise starting at Place Stéphanie. Place Stéphanie is in the shopping part of Avenue Louise, nearest to the city center (Avenue Louise is long and goes all the way to Ter Kameren "forest"). I estimate the hotel to be less than 500 meters on Chaussée de Charleroi from Place Stéphanie (there is another hotel with more or less the same name and under same ownership I think on the same street, a bit closer to Avenue Louise). The area immediately surrounding the hotel is a bit "darker", I don't know why, probably something to do with the way the light falls and the immediately surrounding buildings, but definitely safe and only a few steps away from plenty of shops and restaurants. It's not like walking further (away from Place Stéphanie) will bring you to bad areas either: some quite nice parts of Sint-Gilles lie there with plenty of good places to eat or just to stroll around.
The old city center (Grande Place etc.) can definitely be reached on foot, in fact we often do this on a sunny weekend day. It will take you about 20 minutes along good sights: avenue louise, then past the immense and slighlty monstruous Court House (Place Poelaert), past Zavel/Sablon down to Grande Place. Going back is a bit more tiresome since it is mainly uphill. Alternatively, you are about 10 minutes by foot from the Marollen area (restobières etc), which makes for an especially good visit on Sunday. Going back you can take the elevator (no kidding).
There's a tram that basically stops before the hotel and takes you along the same track to the Zavel (Sablon) and further towards Place Royale, and then along Rue Royale (Bier Circus) towards Schaarbeek. For the Grande Place it is best to hop off at either Zavel/Sablon or Place Royale and walk down towards the centre (about 5 minutes).
Don't hesitate to ask more questions. I've obviously never stayed at the hotel, but from the outside it always looked great. You can also mail me privately of course.
p.s.: when will you be here? Any chance of grabbing a beer together?
