Belgium Trip - Day 3 - ZBF

It seems that we all got fairly good sleep. A nice breakfast, then off to Dampoort by Taxi, because it was snowing. It lightened up, and the day was actually fairly nice. A short train ride to St. Niklaas. As we arrive at the fest site, two Americans are in line. We strike up a nice conversation and anticipate the opening – which was a few minutes late. Then, we had to wait while speeches were made. WUPT!!!
First beer of the day was Zinnebir, by Sint-Pieters, in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. A very nice surprise. Hop flavors and aroma. A nice beer from a new small brewery. We started a rating system, 1-10, 10 being the best. Over the day there were many 7’s, some 8’s and a few 9’s. Unfortunately, there was one brewery that produced a 2 and a 1. The 2 was an amber and the 1 was a creek. I hate to name names, but the brewery name starts with A and ends with K.
Great beers included De Ranke Kriek and XX Bitter, Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze, Dupont Avec les Bons Voeux, Rochefort 8, Nice Chouffe 2003, De Cam Oude Geuze (all De Cam beers were great!) and Bios Vlammse Bourgogne from Van Steenberge.
On the whole, we had 53 beers at the fest.
Met some old acquaintances, and met some new folks as well. Finally met Joris, ever so briefly. I remember it, he may not. I know we were both a bit foggy at the time. Of course, that could have been the cigarette smoke. We were in the “no smoking” section at the end of the hall. However, it didn’t take long before idiots were standing directly below the no-smoking signs and puffing on their coffin nails. As the day progressed, the smoke level had lowered from the ceiling to about 3 inches off the floor. It got so bad that we had to leave.
The anticipated highlight of the trip was ruined by cigarette smoke. I will not return to Belgium until smoking is banned in pubs, restaurants and cafes. There’s no reason for me to fly all that way, spend all that money and be terrorized by smoke. I still have a cough from the smoke at the ZBF.
We made our way back to the hotel and had night cap, which included Belle-Vue Geuze. I will not mention who ordered it. It truly was awful. Fortunately, we also had Duvel , Westmalle Tripel and Orval.
