Belgium Trip - Day 6 - Brugge

Posted by Rich Link on 04/13/2005 03:48:18 PM

March 8

After a good night’s sleep at Hotel Carolus, and an equally good breakfast, we snap some photos of the brewery and take a taxi to the train station. An uneventful trip, except for the fact that Tod got to see the ladies in the windows again as we entered Brussels.

As we arrive in Brugge it starts to rain, perfect timing for our walk out to the taxis. A short ride to our B & B (http://users.skynet.be/brugge-gheeraert), which is located three blocks off of the Burg. We have stayed at this B & B four times. We love the location, the quiet, Roos is a very nice lady, the breakfast is great and the rooms are comfortable. It’s also quite affordable (60 Euro per night).

We start out for a walk to show Tod and Kari the layout of the city. Before too long we’re WUPT, and find ourselves at Erasmus. Two beers I had been looking forward to drinking at Erasmus were Avec Les Bons Voeux and unsweetened Liefman’s Kriek – both on tap. This turned into a pretty nice little session – 2 Bon Voeux, 2 Krieks, 2 Westmalle Dubbels, Tripel Karmeliet, Rose de Gambrinus and “21”, the anniversary beer brewed for Erasmus by De Dolle.

A happy bunch, we made our way to ‘t Brugs Beertje for a round of Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze, Slaapmutske Blond and De Dolle Extra Export Stout. Daisy was as kind as ever. We then headed over to another of our favorite Brugge pubs, Staminee de Garre, down a small alley off of Breidelstraat. The house beer, De Garre Tripel, is a very nice malty and creamy beer of 8% alcohol, brewed by Van Steenberghe. We had three of those, two Brugge Tripels, a Gulden Draak, a Steenbrugge Dubbel and a Malheur 10. A very nice session.

It was time to have something to eat. We stopped at Tom Ponce, which is right on the corner of Breidelstraat and The Burg. I was consumed with my lasagna, and didn’t notice what anyone else had. We were all happy. The girls had wince, while Tod and I had half liters of Rodenbach. The beer list is not so great.

A pretty good day in Brugge.
