Introductions and planning a trip to Belgium

Posted by Aaron Hecker on 02/08/2001 10:16:44 PM

Hello,

My name is Aaron and I'm hopelessly in love with Belgian beer! I've been reading posts on this sight for the last two months and find the babble entertaining and informative. I'm heading to Belgium for the second time this time with my wife, March 29 through April 9 and would appreciate any recommendations from all of you. Dee Dee, my wife, shares my love for Belgian beer but stays away from the high octane stuff.

First a little background. I'm in the medical device business now but I brewed professionally for four years along side fellow babbler, Dann Paquette. I still occasionally get over to the brewery and help Dann brew beer but not as often as I would like. If any of you are in Boston I recommend stopping by the brewery. Contact Dann or I first though because a lot of the good stuff we brewed is stashed away. A few years ago Dann and I travelled to Belgium for a four day jaunt with very little advance info. Working out of Brussels, (bad idea, we got lost everywhere we drove) we visited, De Dolle, Westvleteren (cafe only, of course), Van Eecke, Brunehaut, Cantillon, and Vapeur. At night we spent all of our time at Bier Circus. It was a truly magical visit. I hope my second visit is as eventful.

What my wife and I have planned so far is the following.

Brussels: Friday-Sunday

Bruges: Monday and Tuesday

Ostend: Wednesday

Poperinge/Watou: Thursday and Friday

Ghent: Saturday and Sunday

I have the CAMRA guide and have put together a list of cafes and breweries to try and visit. I've tried to follow the "closed days" listed in the CAMRA guide but if any of you have any updates I would appreciate them.

Cafes I would like to visit are the following:

Brussels: Beir Circus (of course), Moeder Lambic, Porte Noir, Mort Subite

Bruges: Brugs Beertje, Garre, Erasmus

Ostend: Bottelje

Westveteren: Vrede

Watou: Hommelhof

Ghent: Hopduvel, Waterhuis

Breweries I would like to get to are:

Dolle, Straffe Hendrik, Rodenbach, Bie, Van Eecke, and Cantillon.

My definite, must visit places are de Dolle (only open Saturday and Sunday, Beir Circus (closed Sunday) and Westvleteren (closed Friday. so these places have controlled the itinery.

We love great food so suggestion for dining would also be appreciated. I recently read about Jeremy's exploits and am wondering if he could send me a phone number or info about the B&B they stayed in at St Bernardus. Is it the same number as the brewery?

And one last thing, do any of you have any suggestions at to the best way to get beer back into the states from Belgium. On our earlier trip, Dann and I carried what seemed like two cases each back through customs but that was a lot of work.

Thanks ahead of time. I'll try to contribute in a positive way to other babblings in the future.

Aaron
