20 Years of Beer ... in ONE night !!

Posted by Mark. on 03/02/2001 07:11:50 AM

Well, a bit later than expected, but I did get to The Kulminator last night ... and what a night I had !!!

I arrived at about 9.30pm for my first drink ... which was "on the house" !!! Those who know the Kulminator will know they have a fantastic "Guest Book". If you make an entry in the book, Dirk and Leen ask you to fill in a form with your name, address and date of birth. If you do this, every year you will get a "birthday card" which entitles you to a free "beer from the tap" (no bottled stuff !!) when you present your card. I received my FIFTH such card for my birthday last week ... if anyone is interested I am "Guest Number 417" in the guest book ... of over 2500 entries !!

So for my freebie I chose a Karmeliet Tripel on tap ... beautiful, very similar to the bottled version, except it probably has more carbonation. Then I got stuck into the really good stuff !!

Beer number 2 was a bottle of Witkap Tripel from 1981 !!! The bootle was so old it still had "Trappistenbier" on the label. It had a musty odour and a madeira like taste. It lost its head almost immediately and had a very thin body ... and interesting experience !!

Beer number 3 took me forward five years to a 1986 vintage Stille Nacht ... absolutely fantastic, the highlight of the evening. Very sweet, yet very slightly sour !! Beautiful full body and very sticky ... my lips almost got stuck to the glass at one stage !!

Another five years to beer number 4 ... a 1991 Chimay Blue. Following on from the Stille Nacht it was hard to taste the Chimay at first !! However after a few mouthfuls I found it very smooth with some very slight sherry notes. I also thought it was a little lighter in colour than the almost black Chimay Blue I am used to !!

So another five years to beer number 5 ... a 1996 bottle of Belgissimus !! I would bet that most of you are now saying "Belgissi ... what ???". I discovered this beer when it was recommended to me by Leen on a previous visit to the Kulminator. It is a "contract beer" brewed especially for the "Hop Duvel" Beer shop in Gent. Blond in colour, 9% abv, with an enormous head and an aroma of ... candy shops !!! I dont know if they had them in the States, but when I was a kid there was a "penny sweet" called Fizzbombs ... this beer tastes like Blue Fizzbombs ... it is a true original and absolutely fantastic ... if you ever get to Kulminator or The Hop Duvel in Gent ... try this beer !!!!

Then to bring my 20 year journey up to date, my 6th and final beer of the evening, out of respect for Frank Fieuw, was a bolleke of De Koninck !!!!!

More Kulminator news ... Dirk is still completely clean shaven ... the legendary "ZZ Top" style beard has gone forever !!

You may or may not be aware that in 1999 Dirk and Leen celebrated two anniversaries ... 20 years in The Kulminator, but 25 years of beer cafés ... there original café was called "Beer Tepmel" and was a smaller place, south of Antwerp. They were there from 1974 to 1979 ... and the amazing news is that Leen tells me that they still have beers cellared in the old place ... some dating back to the early 1970's !!! Now and again they bring a few over to the Kulminator. A recent example is a batch of 1975 Rochefort's ... if I remember correctly Joelle tried one of these on her last visit ?? Can you just imagine what other treasures must lie in that cellar ???!!!

So today I am a happy boy ... after another night in beer heaven !!!

Cheers !! Mark.
