We all know it's a bad idea to give a kid a pint of the local, but Bondy's talking about what basically amounts to licking the foam off the rim of the glass. Whether the kid takes a liking to it or not, I'm sure we all have enough common sense and parenting skills to not let it become an issue - in public or private. I fondly remember the first sips of beer I had from my Dad's mug in some of the English pubs we used to visit in the countryside outside of London. Unfortunately, his beer of choice at the time was Watney's, but this was about 1972 and I just liked the malty sweetness of it balanced with what was for me at the age of 6 an exotic floral bitterness. I am now a happy beer drinker with more or less the same number of brain cells as those who have never touched a drop.
I am also aware that alcoholism is a serious disease that has had negative consequences (including members of my own family), but I don't think there's any evidence to support claims that early exposure to beer will increase the odds of an alcohol dependency.
