Welcome to the homeBBBrew board!
Like the BBB, the homeBBBrew board is not a club, just a place to talk about making beer. Is there a swap you would like to see happen? If we can find a few others who have something similar then lets do it!

Anyone got a woody??
Nope - its not spam! Last year (I think it was) we did a "Gimme a Woody" homebrew swap, the theme was wood-aged beer. I have a couple things on hand that I can call wood aged, have one in particular in mind. Anyone else? Its a neat premise for a swap and is very open stylistically. Last one ranged from a barley wine to a flanders red. We need a minimum of 4, are there three others out there?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
No time frame so far, so I accept! I'm throwing in my baltic porter. How's that keg of cherry flanders red doing (was that kegged?)?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
The Cherry Flanders Red might have to be bottled up for this, ya think?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
As will my porter. Have you played with bottling pre-carbonated beer from a keg?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Negative. I haven't tried dat, sounds tricky, what dissolved psi of CO2 do you recommend? I was thinking of using one of those pre-weighed droplets of sugar from Coopers or Muntons.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
I have a Wee Heavy ready to go that spent its secondary in a Bourbon barrel. I also have an English Barleywine that was recently bottled after spending six months in another bourbon barrel. The "Flemish Pale Ale" has a couple of french oak balls in the carboy and with the cooler weather, it may be time to check and see if it is ready for bottles. I'll add one of these to the mix. Are you looking for a wide variety of styles again or similar beers with differences in the wood?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Al - next time you're over I'll demonstrate. There are a lot of ways to get bad results, but after loads of experimenting I figured out how to get enough CO2 in the bottle to matter. The bottled versions will be less carbonated than the keg, but to tell the truth I have had plenty of draft beers with less head forming qualities.

Ted - for this one style is not a concern (which is unusual). If anything I think a variety of styles would be better, examples of what wood can do over a wide range. All of the beers you mentioned would be great, personally the Belgian pale would be of the greatest interest to me.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
I will supply the cherry Flanders and/or Oud Bruin for this swap. Okely dokely?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Killer and/or killer. Either would be outstanding, great to have new blood in the swap circle! Looks like we are 3, one more out there?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
I've got my all brett beer that's been sitting on oak for the past 4-5 months.

I'll fill the gap if there is no one else to join in. I don't want to bogart all the swaps. So, I'll be the back up if we can't get another participant.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Bogart?! I wouldn't worry about that, I don't think its an accurate use of the word! Actually having both you and Al in one like this sounds like a particularly neat idea. Welp, thats 4, any other takers are welcome. I'll keep this open till then end of the week.

Ted, can you send me info on you? Namely email and mailing address. steve at cmg dot net.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
What time frame are you guys looking at? My brewclub did a Barrel Brew... Belgian Dark Strong OG 1.100 about 11% ABV and aged in a Jack Daniels barrel... need to bottle some if the club says it is "ready"...

We don't have a timeframe at this point. Has your club not given an indication when bottling might be possible?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
I've got several bourbon barrel beers that I need to bottle;

a sticke alt and a double IPA spring to mind, as well as the blackened raison bourbon barrel brett dubbel...so I'm in with at least one!

Re: Anyone got a woody??
OK then, as soon as Al warms up we'll plan this one! :D Chet, its been too long. Sounds like we have a terrific crew going on here. Let me then rephrase the question.

Would anyone be able to do this say half way into November?

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Mid-Nov is ok. Wee Heavy is ready, Flemish Pale hope to get it ready.

The Flemish Pale was made on 12/31/05 with the Roeselare. Expect that I should repitch yeast and prime to get it ready by Nov. I'll check gravity, but any long term issues with the Brett making bottle bombs? This will be my first bottling with Brett.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
I'll bottle some this weekend w/fresh yeast - should be good by mid November.

I've missed the last couple of swaps, so I'm excited to get back in the game...

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Excellent. I have something in hand as does Al. With you 3 guys OK with November then we are on. Mikey, We won't move big on this for at least a few weeks, see if you can find out about your clubs big keg. Worst comes to worst I think this swap topic will be at least an annual one.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
I'll bottle the cherry flanders w/ simple sugar and fresh Saccharomyces to minimize any Brett grenades.

The cherry Flanders should be refridgerated upon arrival...

hard to say how much cherry is left..

Ted, I think you should be fine in that respect.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
We're having a meeting on Thursday and will be sampling the Barrel Brew at that time... I'm going to put it to a vote depending on the flavor and will bottle as soon as we split it up... I hope everyone feels it is ready, because I'd love to get in on this swap... if not, I'll make sure to save some for next time :-)

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Mikey, does bottling a little commit you guys to bottling the whole thing? Maybe just a couple bottles-worth can be drawn off. That is if it seems ready, it would be a shame to jump the gun.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
That might be doable... I plan on bottle conditioning my 8 gallons, but I'll discuss that as an option tonight as well...

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Sounds good, keep one thing in mind though. The last one was great and thins one is looking to be very high in potentail as well. That means there will certainly be another. Given the bottle conditioning I think it would make more sense to hold out for the '07 woody swap, I'm sure there will be one.

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Ok, looks like I'm out of this one... the club vote came out to age it for 6 months in the barrel, so it won't be ready until sometime around February... I'll make sure to keep some for the next woody swap for sure!!

mikey

Re: Anyone got a woody??
Yep, another great swap. I always look forward to these swaps. Very informative and just plain fun.

I, too, was losing brain function near the end. Would have been fine if it hadn't been for the barley wine tacked on at the end.
