dark sour ale swap interest
Any interest in a swap and coordinated tasting of dark sour ales?

Anything from deep amber to black in color I guess - so that would probably even include soured porters and the like. Souring agents could be bretts or mixed strains or whatever.

I have one that is about 10 months old that is deep, deep brown, earthy and dank with notes of cherries and grapes from the funk. It was made using the Wyeast lambic blend at primary and rested for about 6 months in plastic.

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
Damn...wish you proposed this sooner, I would love to have some babbler feedback on my RIS/aged flemish red blend, but alas I only have three 12 oz'ers left and i'm not willing to send out 750's of my precious elixir.... I am planning on blending up another batch soon, but probably wont get around to it for a couple of months (have to brew the RIS first!)

Maybe if there aren't too many people I could part with a couple of 750's but they would be hard to part with!

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
Atleast on my end, I could always exchange a 750 of either my soured dark ale or my 100% brett blond in 750 or a 3 yr old 750 of flem red from the original Wyeast release as I understand the dislike of releasing the big ones......

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
well.... I put most of it in big bottles because it's one for laying down. But, I would defintely feel better getting another 750 in return....usually I just buy beers in champagnes I can reuse but I had to buy two cases of blank 750's for it, and they aren't cheap these days...

I really need to get the adapter for the hand capper so I can reuse euro sized bottles...

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
I am interested in this. I've got the other half of a batch of old ale that I made for the sugar swap that's been sitting on WL Brett. L. for about 10 months. I was thinking of bottling it soon...don't know what it tastes like yet, tho.

Beer Swaps
I've always been interested in these beer swaps, but the following ALWAYS occurs:

1.) I consumed most of my product of interest since it was brewed many moons ago.

2.) My product of interest isn't ready.

3.) I didn't brew enough of my product of interest (I do a lot in 2.5 g 'test' batches).

4.) Et cetera (insert other excuses here)...

Anyhow, maybe this has been suggested before, but I wish we could have a 'beer exchange' page, or maybe just a heading (for example, 'BEER EXCHANGE, MAR '09: SAISON') that we could all search for ('BEER EXCHANGE', for instance) in archives.

Plus, I'd like to see it suggested earlier. For instance, now, in August of '08 we could post a first message about an exchange in March '09 of Saison, or March '10 for soured/wild ale. This would help everyone plan ahead, at least in my case.

Maybe there's some style-exchange standard that I haven't picked up on, but I just thought that I'd suggest this. Thanks, and I'd appreciate any comments or corrections, just-in-case I don't understand something.

Otherwise, thanks to everyone for helping make a phenomenal site for anyone who wants to brew outstanding Belgian Ales!

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
Sooo.... are you saying you don't have dark sour ale to swap?

;)

I agree with you on one level, but at the same time I'm not sure how much planning can get done so far in advance. Life doesn't work out so easily that way.... I'm sure pete just tossed out this idea on a whim, and if people have some beers to trade fine, if not, then the post is in the archives for later...mtc mentioned something about a high gravity sour swap several months ago (not quite the same but I'm sure some beers overlap)

<<Sooo.... are you saying you don't have dark sour ale to swap?>>

That is what I am saying. Or was not saying. ;)

<<mtc mentioned something about a high gravity sour swap several months ago (not quite the same but I'm sure some beers overlap)>>

I have a beer that is an overlap for these two potential swaps, but it's still in secondary. Been there for about 9 months now. Should proabbly give it a taste soon, last I tried it was coming along nicely.

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
Yupp, I'm just trying to garner interested parties and establish a timeline for the folks that still have to bottle.

I count 4 people right now. lets see if anyone else has anything to offer during the next week or so and then maybe establish a date.

I'd throw out a early to midOct ship date and perhaps a late Oct tasting so that bottling folks will have time to bottle and carbonate? Or later, like sometime between Thanksgiving and Santatime?

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
Well, I would love to participate, but I just racked a couple of weeks ago. I have three kegs of Oud Bruin, 2 with Brett-L, and one with Pedio at the moment. We were going to blend with an old sour brown, but i am not sure when.

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
I have a couple that could qualify assuming we make it in October or later as pettec suggested-- a flanders red and an oud bruin.

I'm still down for the high gravity swap should anyone else be interested.

Hoping one more person to join to make it an even half-dozen.....

Any else want to participate?

Timing would be shipping samples out by Halloween if that works for folks..... Please comment if you have a concern with that timing.

Pete, are you taking the lead on this one? That's great if you are, over the years I've been hoping someone would.

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
Pete, you can count me out of this one. My beer is still in the carboy and I wasn't planning on bottling for another 4-6 weeks. I could use the saved cash anyways.

Cheers

Re: dark sour ale swap interest
Now that I think about it I only have two 12 oz bottles left...

I could send out some strong oud bruine...just took second place last night for sours at Malt Madness, a local comp., behind my 1st place all-brett berliner ;)

Depending on the date, I have a sour cherry Brett stout ready to go. Let me know if you still are looking for one more.

Plan on a halloween timeframe ship date, so if you still have beer in fermentors, get it moving towards bottling.....

SteveG- yep, I was going to take lead. You'll need to enlighten me to behind the scenes stuff on the chat for the actual tasting time.

Pete, I'd be delighted to share with you the process I use. It would probably be easier to do it by phone, if that sounds good email your number to steve at cmg dot net

Now that its October, reminder to the folks that still need to bottle..... I'll work on getting shipping details together in the next few weeks and then ship date is planned for around Halloween time.
