Re: a new BugFarm is upon us........
I'm new to wild ale brewing having only a few under my belt. I'd love the opportunity to experiment with some of these strains and share them with my homebrewing friends here in Seattle.

Al, I would like to work with this if you have extra. I mailed you a package with a few offering including the first bug farm super saison Tuesday. I'm interested in your feed back so shoot me an email when you get around to trying it.

Cheers

John

John,

Yep, I just received your pkg. Thanks a bunch for the t-shirts & mead too.....love Saisons - look forward to trying it.

I've stepped up the bugfarm starter to 2.5 gal.....

UPDATE
OK. I think I'm hitting the maximum cut-off point.

I've started to condense the yeast population into a slurry. In order to make enough for everyone, I won't be preparing for a direct 5 gal pitch, BUT it will be a good amount and its fresh. A small starter will suffice for 5 gal primary, but not mandatory since it will be a sour brew anyway and time will dictate when ready.

Bacterial bugs to be added in the next few days. Then I release the bugs! If you haven't sent me yer address......Giddy-up!

Babalu & DBear & B Horn -

If I don't hear from a few folks who need to forward their address, then I can get ya in.

Right now, I need addresses from Gail, Heliophile, Ryane (or is that Ryan E? I have yours of course), maybe a couple others, I'll check my other e-mail.......

Re: a new BugFarm is upon us........
Very cool. I guess you can add me as a backup, backup. If everybody else falls through. :)

On a side note, I just checked on my bugfarm 2 batch and it's got a nice patchy white pellicle on it. I keep meaning to add some maltodextrin or flour or something since it was so dry when I added the bugs already, but they seem to be doing their thing. Once of these days I'll give it a taste.

Just re-sent my email to your eastcoastyeast address from the initial post in this thread. Please let me know if that's not the right email.

Smithers......release the bugs!
OK, time to ship!

Expect most of them in 2-4 days starting tomorrow depending on where you are. I tried to protect against freezing in some pkgs. - hope that works.

Come in Heliophile.....over.....

Thanks Al! You rock! I know we are expecting some cold nasty weather here in Western NY (Lake Erie) the next few days. Really looking forward to the Holidaze now!

Re: a new BugFarm is upon us........
You send them USPS Al? The high today was 10 below so I'm a little worried about it freezing if it has to sit on my porch. USPS is a post office box though.

Re: a new BugFarm is upon us........
Yeah, US post office.

That's cold. Maybe you can have them hold it & pick it up later? Inconvenient I reckon. Sorry 'bout that. If it freezes, I bet some bugs will survive....add to starter.

I wonder what is best for this weather.......I'll have to address this if I go "pro bug supplier"

JohnA - I sent a box to the shop on the card you sent me.

Any problems, lemme know.

Smellysell,

Any problems don't hesitate to contact me. I'll make another batch if necessary over the Holidays and we'll work out a solution for shipping.

Re: a new BugFarm is upon us........
USPS should be fine as long as it doesn't freeze before getting to the post office.

Thanks again for doing this Al! Have my first turbid mash all planned out so I'm REALLY excited!

Re: a new BugFarm is upon us........
Glad to hear you intend to do a turbid mash. You'll get the most out of this blend doing so.

I'm starting to think HELIOPHILE is MIA. If I don't hear from ya, the bugfarm tube will go to the waiting list - that being BABALU 87(email me) .

Lastly, there are some "dregs" left from the bugfarm batch. If DBEAR & EXPLOSIVEBEER wants a "dreg" let me know, probably a few mLs and a wood chip or two.

Re: a new BugFarm is upon us........
Excellent idea from one youse guys (James G) on using some glycerin in the transport medium to cold, frigid areas. I forgot about that using 10-15% glycerin will keep bugs from splitting open upon freezing/thawing. I will incorporate this next time. The transport media is low in sugars, high in nutrients (amino acids, vitamins), so this should work well gravity-wise.

Noob question Al, should I just pitch the tube straight in or do a starter?

Re: a new BugFarm is upon us........
What is the batch size?

What kind of beer - lambic or other?

Lambic will have plenty of dextrins/starch for the bugs, and time will dictate when ready. So you can pitch into a lambic directly.

My original plan was to create a direct pitch for most 5 gal beers. Population wise its around 1 x 10^8 cells/ ml, but I could only spare 30-40ml/vial so I could extended to more people. Normal brews would be ~150ml pitch volume at a population of 10^9 cells (of the top of my head while I drink a SN celebration ale). But this won't be a normal beer!!! So underpitching may be OK here. Unlesss....

Higher gravity beers >1060 for example

Bigger volumes of batch 15 gal, 55 gal......

There are some barrel projects out there -
