Welcome to the homeBBBrew board!
Like the BBB, the homeBBBrew board is not a club, just a place to talk about making beer. Is there a swap you would like to see happen? If we can find a few others who have something similar then lets do it!

Sampling from oak barrel
I am looking into the ability of sampling from an oak barrel.

Some use SS nails. Anyone know what size hole and nail is used? IE Russian River

I have seen spiles used in cask beer. Any information on that? I hear a tapered bit sized for the spile. The problem with that is so far I would have to buy 25 spiles, but only need a few.

Thanks for the help,

BW

Re: Sampling from oak barrel
The hole/nail size is about 1/8".

we use this on our club sour barrel and it seems to work pretty well.

We didn't predrill since the barrel was filled before we found out about the method. Just bang in the nail and go.
