where to find Bourbon Barrels?
Hi, I'm working on a Russian Imperial Stout homebrew and I'd like to age it in some old Bourbon Barrels, but have no idea where to find any. I'm based in Los Angeles, anyone know of where I might find some in the area? shipping?

I've been told they usually cost around $60, does this sound right?

Thanks

Re: where to find Bourbon Barrels?
I don't believe bourbon is commonly aged in 5 gal bbls? That would make things pretty laborious for a large distiller! Could be wrong... if someone more knowledgeable about whiskey wants to chime in.

Re: where to find Bourbon Barrels?
Get some fellow brewers to help you fill a full sized (55 gallon) barrel if you can. At ~$60 they cost less than the small barrels do, and it is a great group project if you have the space.

Re: where to find Bourbon Barrels?
I picked up a 55 gallon barrel from lost abbey for $25, that had one batch through it, no Brett., so it will be fairly neutral for addition of flavor to the batch. But they get rid of a lot of barrels every once in a while, I'm sure if you contacted them they would let you know when some might be available.

I have a fresh dump 50L bourbon barrel on its way from Austen TX, that is costing me for $120 with shipping. The guy has several of these at this price.

Re: where to find Bourbon Barrels?
Thanks for that thread. I spoke with this guy a few days ago, but was concerned that $125 was too much to spend on a 5 gallon.

Do you need much additional equipment/supplies? or are they pretty much good to go when you get them?

Re: where to find Bourbon Barrels?
I think you might need to get a bung ,build a stand, and sanitize if you want. But I have not got mine yet. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow, so I'll let you know.

You might want to see if you and find some micro distilleries in your area? Ballast point down here in SD has a distillery, but I have not asked what they do with their old barrels, I assume they use them for their beer.

Yeah, I think you're right, I'm going to make the rounds. I spoke with Tomme at Port Brewing/Lost Abbey, but he said they don't deal in anything that small. Have a call into the Bruery as well.
