Welcome to the homeBBBrew board!
Like the BBB, the homeBBBrew board is not a club, just a place to talk about making beer. Is there a swap you would like to see happen? If we can find a few others who have something similar then lets do it!

What Media to use?
For you guys plating some of the bacteria used in beer, what media(s) are you using?

Check out the Brettanomyces project. While the media was used for yeast cultivation, the MYPG worked great for Lactobacillus culture.

This is something I've also been curious about. Does anyone have a good reference for the aspiring micro-culturist.

Re: What Media to use?
You can sucessfully culture Lactobacilli using malt agar. The growth of Lacto will be pin-point and clear or transluscent as opposed to larger dense or opaque yeast colonies. The pin-point Lacto colonies can then be transferred to wort. Good Luck

Should a stab be used for long term storage?

Re: What Media to use?
Not necessary. I think you will find it difficult to recover after stabbing agar and the growth will be light anyway. It would be best to keep it in broth/wort at least as a back-up.

Thanks guys. I am the original poster, I just couldn't figure out how to post correctly so my name came up as "Plating Lactobacillus".

For the wort/broth culture do you keep feeding it once in a while?

Re: What Media to use?
I have found adding a small amout of CaCO3 to the stored lactobacillus culture (in weak wort) helps keeping them stay fresh longer (prevents the pH dropping too low).
