Welcome to the homeBBBrew board!
Like the BBB, the homeBBBrew board is not a club, just a place to talk about making beer. Is there a swap you would like to see happen? If we can find a few others who have something similar then lets do it!

Funniest tasting ever!!
So it's CiderDays, day 2. 11:00 to 12:30 is the BYO tasting, the original idea was that you bring your horrible disaster of a cider and the judges will help you understand what you did wrong. This happens year after year, now its a home cider maker showcase. Everything is really good - almost.

So the first bottle the panel grabs of the collection people have set in front is a growler. They ask whose it is, a guy rasies his hand and says he's new. He gets a round of applause as do all newbies. Panelist pours a glass for another panelist, who comments on how clear it is, like water. He tastes it ... it IS water!! The guy left the cider growler at home and grabbed one he must have been soaking or something. Uproarious laughter, the guy says he guesses he should get getter at labeling.

A few fine ciders are sampled, then back to our maiden cider maker. There are two smaller bottles of the other cider he brought, one is opened and the pourer starts distributing. The panel opens the other bottle and its a lot darker than the other bottle. That was because it was beer!!

With some judges, I wouldn't have been surprised if they told him to age it a little longer or don't ferment too cold etc

Heh. Or to try adding staggered nutrient additions?

Actually they probably did say something like that, but for comic relief. I hadn't thought of this aspect, but one awesome thing about this home cider maker evaluation session was it wasn't competition or guideline oriented. It was a panel of guys who've been doing it for decades and get great results just sharing their knowledge. It didn't occur to me how refreshing it was to have the BJCP element removed.
