Welcome to the homeBBBrew board!
Like the BBB, the homeBBBrew board is not a club, just a place to talk about making beer. Is there a swap you would like to see happen? If we can find a few others who have something similar then lets do it!

I just really like the work levifunk is doing!

Homebrew Contest with Emphasis on Sour beers
Just trying to judge if there is any interest. My homebrew club Nordeast Brewers Alliance in Minneapolis, MN is putting on a Homebrew contest this October. The judging will be on Oct 12th with the corresponding Beer Fest on the 13th. Although this is going to be an AHA and BJCP sanctioned event open to all categories, I want to put a large emphasis on the FUNK beer categories. I'm thinking that I'll promote it hear in order to draw some interest, and then create a unique prize for the Pucker prize. Maybe have the "extreme pucker" category for the most acidic beer. Any ideas on how to make this really cool and increase participation nationwide? I'll be competing my Flanders Red that I recently blended. I'll also be competing a Saison Brett, and most likely a 100% Brett Black beer!

I'm open to suggestions on how to make this a really cool event for all homebrewers but I really want to emphasize THE FUNK! Any one participated in a homebrew contest that has emphasized the FUNKY beers?

Threaten people with disembowelment if you discover they added lactic acid.

Re: Homebrew Contest with Emphasis on Sour beers
Maybe just have everything to normal comp guidelines for entering and then roll all sours into a best sour category, along with 1,2,3 of each style it was entered in?

Not sure if you would have to get an extra bottle for all the sour beer entrants?

Re: Homebrew Contest with Emphasis on Sour beers
One of the local clubs (KCBM) often has a "Special Prize" for a particular style. They treat it like a BOS.

This year it was "hoppy" beers, a couple of years ago it was "Belgians".

Pucker Prize sounds cool. Offer some type of equipment (e.g. a barrel) as a premium award. That should stimulate some interest. Get a vendor to donate it and feature them in the promo and program.

Re: Homebrew Contest with Emphasis on Sour beers
I have a beer I could enter. I think JMcGs suggestion of a mis-proportional prize in the sour area is a good way to encourage the direction of the comp. Personally I'd hope to not win something like a pucker prize. Like with hops, IMO over the top for the sake of over the top is not a good thing. If the prize was for the all-round best sour/funky beer though, that be more of an honor.
